ummmmm, sorry for not posting in (however long). it's not because we don't still love the oilers, because we do, and we watch, and we follow. that's how we know we're dead last in the conference as of me writing this. it's just kind of hard to comment about each game when we lose, y'know? when injuries are piling up all over again...

but at least fernie seems to be getting in better shape. he skated with the team recently and apparently gained back all the weight he lost over the summer. so has c. but that's not a good thing in her case?!

SO GET THIS.

a random customer at work says to us, "hey i got two tickets to the game tonight from my boss but i can't go and none of my friends even want them." me and my buddy are immediately like, frothing at the mouth, verbally dibsing the tickets, until we realize he gets off at 8, i get off at 10, game starts at 6. PPV means we can't watch it. radios are in the other department so i can't even tune into 630 ched.

highlights made it sound like an amazing game. they were even box seats. :(

first goal as an oiler by dustin penner. same with pitkanen. sanderson scores TWICE. so upset at not being able to go. you know, it's almost worth being fired over.

WHO AM I KIDDING. SOOO WORTH BEING FIRED OVER. they say hindsight is 20/20..

GO rookies! really showed what they're worth tonight. as much as i hate to give up a lead and wind up in OT, shootouts are the most exciting part of hockey as far as i'm concerned.

and yes, 51 - that post-game interview floored me. gene had to point out roli's the oldest guy on the team and took shots from sam gagner when the latter was 10 ahaha...

overall, great game. we could have won it in regulation had we held out literally a few more seconds but i don't think i'd have enjoyed it as much. was cheering by the end.

we had ten days to try him out so to speak, but this just has to show how much confidence management has in the kid. roster photos are STILL not up, but you can see his. gagner looks scrawny but i know for a fact he's actually pretty buff because sportsnet played a segment on him back during the super series and he was shirtless the entire time. slut.

PRE-SEASON OVER. FIRST REAL GAME THIS THURSDAY. boobirds should also mark the 23rd on their calendars cause that's when a certain mullet-head returns. should be interesting to see fan's reactions. i know there's going to be some loser on the board who makes a thread like this:

hello all, another month later!

OKAY OKAY. apologies, been busy and whatnot, gathering bits and pieces to form a halfway interesting post.

i'm happy with our 3-1 preseason record so far. the one loss was a close game against vancouver, and i guess you can blame my torn loyalties. calgary has had four straight losses (two shutouts.. ouch) under mike keenan. guess their rookies are pathetic. but with darryl "dopey" sutter as your GM..

as for last night's game, moreau was hurt near the end, something to do with his ankle. if he's out for the season again.. fingers crossed i guess. scarier things have happened.

hello all, one month later!

slow days in the hockey world, which means the oilers world is completely static. i routinely check TSN but few articles attract my interest. obscure UFAs signing with the blue jackets (a ho-hum team in their own right, is anyone out there honestly a CBJ fan?). bertuzzi's civil trial. niedermayer STILL on the fence about retirement.

i am in hockey withdrawal. i miss it so much. i miss roli and syk-- *GASP. REALIZE. CHOKE.* PETR!!!!!! WHERE HAVE YOU GONE

so i guess the team really isn't what it used to be and it's just roloson that i'm longing to see again. the pre-season starts in a little over half a month. unless something absolutely earth-shattering happens before that, i guess i'll see you guys then.

in personal news, c. is on the move to toronto this year, boo hoo, but it's not like she ever WATCHED the games anyway so you'll still get her brand of silly photos and sportsnet videos. (in response to my jabs that the maple leafs will be her new team, her response was "fuck them." i concur.) i think we make a good partnership because she frequents the media outlets i never go to (sportsnet, the newspaper, etc). now's where i contradict myself by linking to those exact media outlets.

further googling has revealed that c's entry, guess that oiler v2, is our most linked, especially on calgary forums. we also got quite a bit of traffic for the autograph signing photos.

here's a mystery to me: we're being credited for icons i didn't know we made. i am looking through our old posts and cross posts and can't find anything of the sort though apparently c. has been churning out pyatt-related icons behind my back. why was this necessary! i like the nucks! puppy dog eyes?!

and according to TSN's poll, 90% of voters believe penner deserves 3mil or less per year, the tiny majority of which lean towards the 3mil. well nobody really thought the ducks would match. i just hope penner doesn't pull a *gulp* lupul. he had more points as a duck than penner did. you can't expect that kind of performance to just transfer over. the players on your line need to perform at their best too, obviously.

but we do get a much bigger guy in penner. he's three inches taller and like forty pounds heavier than lupes.

how come these days whenever a newly signed player says "i'm happy to be an oiler," i raise an eyebrow as if to ask, really?

well it's fixed now. for further reference, i do not guarantee our layout(s) look good in anything besides firefox. you all should be using it anyway. and even if it's viewable in IE, i bet you it'll look way better in FF because i LOVE to abuse the rounded corners tag which only works in the latter. plus the padding values are different for each browser, which is retarded because you'd think 20px here would be 20px there but that's just the code monkey in me ranting.

in closing, c. still sucks at html.

Lowe has signed defenseman Sheldon Souray today, hooray!
Souray was actually on ET Canada's list of the 5 Hottest Canadian Hockey Hunks, but I kind of got mad at him for exposing his bare chest when ET Canada visited his home. But, he's kind of a cutie, and he's actually an Alberta boy too, so that's pretty great.

I'm heading home to Alberta... I couldn't be happier with my decision and I can tell you it was an easy one to make.

it's the first day of free agency today, and i really didn't expect the oilers to do anything. i logged onto tsn.ca/nhl absently throughout the work day to check out the signings. some passing thoughts:

- holy fuck doesn't it seem like detroit always has a ton of money to spend? shouldn't they be over the cup by now? they've got lidstrom, zetterberg, datsyuk, oh let's sign rafalski too why not.
- oilers sign tarnstrom and grebeshkov. big deal. dick.
- niedermayer's retiring - no he isn't - yes he is - wait wait.. not sure. I HATE YOU
- new york rangers sign drury AND gomez. keep in mind this is the same team who already have jaromir jagr and brendan shanahan. holy fuck that's scary!
- ~~smyth still hasn't been picked up as of me writing this.~~ edit: smyth signs 5-year-deal with the avs. may not be a surprise, but joe sakic had a hand in acquiring him. sucks that that jerk is still in our division. his head is so far up his ass that he [his agent] wouldn't even reply to Kevin Lowe's bid for him. Honestly, ryan smyth is not worth 6.25m/yr, but with all this hype i hope he has a terrible season next year. poor islanders! i only hated them briefly because they were willing to kiss smyth's ass and hand him the keys to the city. but they didn't deserve it i guess. now they've lost both their top scorers and are utterly screwed.

on the plus side, we got a kickass defenseman in joni pitkanen. and he's hemsky's age! i don't care what impossible-to-please pessimists say (aka our entire message board), i like this trade.

but let's take a second to remember gator and lupes. the former, the oilers' longest serving captain - who suffered some criticism lately for not being a star player which every other team seems to name as their cap. and the latter, that pretty hometown boy we traded pronger for, who we had such high expectations of, who was utterly miserable last year and now is off to arguably an even worse team though philly does now have briere and will obviously own next season.

it's a little sad but i think lowe made a really good move. we needed the likes of pitkanen badly. get us a few 20 goal forwards and i think we're in decent shape for next season.

edmontonoilers.com redesigned! and it's blowing. my. mind. but then i thought, hey, this looks familiar. very familiar. why is our URL "oilers.nhl.com" ?? looks like we've been assimilated, networked, and standardized. oh well, still like the layout.

i haven't checked the site in a long time as you can see, not that much is going on, but there are a few cute stories. lol @ jason smith serving coffee.

speaking of the oilers (for the first time in YEARS, it seems)... i miss them a lot. i miss roli the most. he's probably in ontario now, cheering for the sens. it's springtime in edmonton (in case you haven't noticed), and everything about the weather reminds me of the playoffs last year and how happy and in sync the whole city was. when every mall had "you're in oil country" banners and every bus had a marquee that said "go oilers go!" i remember press conference photos, roli with his hilarious sunglasses (HAD A PHOTO BUT CAN'T FIND IT ANYMORE OH GOD), pronger's gap-toothed grin.. we had a life-size poster of him hanging in our bio room. our friends going to the san jose game where we turned the series around. watching the conference finals and playing poker at the same time. all the car flags. people honking on the way home. getting tattoos on whyte ave. watching videos of whyte ave getting trashed. amazing, depressing, nostalgic memories; i can't believe it was last year.

feel free to share your playoff memories too, we can all reminisce a bit.

i told c. this afternoon, "you know what. i know the oilers are losers but.."

you should see how excited c. gets about ottawa games. she'll ditch ANYTHING for an ottawa game, and most nights, they don't disappoint. buffalo held out a few nights ago, meaning there will be no sweep, but the first two series ended in five games, so why shouldn't this one?

the det/ana game was strangely entertaining as well. anaheim pulled through despite pronger's suspension. personally i can't decide how i feel about the hit, it's really a matter of who i hate more: holmstrom (a red wing.. their equivalent of ryan smyth, by which i mean, the garbage goal getter) or pronger (no explanation necessary amiright).

imagine how ottawa must be feeling right now! i'm jealous.

The locker room antics were sooo awkward! Did anyone see that guy dancing to Usher-Yeah and everyone was just kinda watching him and laughing uncomfortably?? Soo awkward, hahaha.

in NHL news, the sens have been really great lately. i heard a guy on the radio at lunch saying, "it's dead silent in buffalo now while the fans think about what happened these last few days. i'll tell you what happened: your team just got your ass handed to you twice on home ice."

also tsn informs me, historically, every year that's ended in a 7, the winner of the stanley cup has been either a canadian team or detroit. cheering for ott even though i'm aligned with buf in the prediction league.. it's been way too long since a canadian team's won. i'd love it.

can i catch you guys up a bit on what's been happening lately? since of course, nothing happens unless i say it happens. i promise i'll stop neglecting this blog soon. there's been way too much crap to deal with lately. c.'s done a decent job of updating. just decent.

on the nucks front, luongo won't say why he was late for OT though the article itself is pretty telling. what illness needs you to take off all your equipment and then put it back on? i want to make a pepto-bismol joke but that's too lame right?

markus naslund promises to be better next year. there is a brief mention of todd bertuzzi. very understated. suspiciously so.

the oilers forum got a major upgrade! avatars and signatures! finally we're out of the stone ages. looks a lot like the canucks forum though, am i right? still not gonna register.

i actually caught a world hockey championship game on TV (at work; it's all i do) and to be completely honest i'm not sure how canada's doing - i thought it was four for four but i'm reading articles that say "five straight"? somebody clarify? the game itself was really close. because czechs kick ass. back-to-back goals for both teams and went to first OT but eric staal scored the winner for us and it's kind of hard to hate him for that.
